The Jacksonville Jaguars faced a nightmarish situation on Monday when quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered a right ankle injury during their game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter when Lawrence’s ankle was inadvertently stepped on by Jaguars tackle Walker Little during a sack by Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.
Lawrence displayed visible pain and frustration, slamming his helmet down as he was assisted off the field and to the locker room. At the time of the injury, Lawrence had amassed 259 passing yards and two touchdowns. Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus missed a subsequent field goal attempt.
The initial diagnosis revealed an ankle sprain, and Lawrence is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday. Jaguars coach Doug Pederson stated postgame that they are still evaluating Lawrence’s condition, and more tests will be conducted.
C.J. Beathard replaced Lawrence at quarterback for the remainder of the game, which ended in an overtime loss for the Jaguars. The loss dropped Jacksonville’s record to 8-4 for the season, still leading the AFC South but with a slim one-game advantage over the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans in the loss column.
Lawrence’s injury adds to a list of notable quarterbacks who have suffered injuries this season, including Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, Deshaun Watson, Anthony Richardson, Joe Burrow, Daniel Jones, and Kenny Pickett. The Jaguars will await further evaluation and hope for a swift recovery for their star quarterback.
