The 3M Open is a highly anticipated event in the world of golf, and it’s no surprise why. The tournament is set to take place at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota, a par 71 course that plays 7431 yards long. Historically, this course has been set up well for players who have length off the tee. With previous champions averaging over 300 yards with the driver, it’s clear that distance is the common denominator in attacking this golf course.
The past four champions of the 3M Open have been Tony Finau, Cameron Champ, Michael Thompson, and Matthew Wolff. Each of these players has demonstrated their ability to hit the ball a long way off the tee, which is a key factor in playing well at TPC Twin Cities.
Tony Finau, who won the 2022 3M tournament last season, will be entering this year’s tournament as a +1600 favorite as the outright winner. Finau is currently 10th in FedEx Cup rankings and 19th in Official World Golf Rankings. He shot -17 under par last year, totaling 67-68-65-67=267 to defeat Emiliano Grillo and Sung Jae Im by three strokes. This golf course sets up well for Finau, and he should be a top 10 finish for the past champion.
Cameron Young is another player to watch out for in this year’s 3M Open. He is the current leading favorite to win the tournament at +1300. Young had a strong outing last week at The Open, shooting -5 (72,68,66 and a final round of 73 (279). Cameron Young ranks 41st in FedEx Cup rankings and 15th in Official World Golf rankings but has yet to produce a tour win. Cam has been struggling with the putter lately, ranking 176th on tour with -0.471 strokes gained putting. If Cam can unlock that area of his game, there is no telling where he goes from there. But until that time comes, we should expect consistent top 10 finishes for him.
Justin Thomas is arguably the PGA tour’s most talented player but has been performing uncharacteristically lately. Missed cuts and poor putting have put Justin in recent turmoil in almost all the tournaments he has competed in. Justin ranks 159th on tour with -0.293 strokes gained putting, which is a clear indicator of his recent success on the golf course. JT will enter this tournament as a +2200 favorite.
